During the 2016 tax season, 279 volunteers, including high school students from Hanna, Pace, Lopez, Rivera, Porter, La Feria and Los Fresnos High Schools, spent countless hours preparing and e-filing tax returns for local working families qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit. And here's what they accomplished:
- Volunteers filed 4,557 returns at no cost to the working families.
- The families received $4,821,174.00 in Earned Income Credits and $1,148,865.00 in Child Tax Credits
- Total refunds received were $9.8 million, and every penny of that money went straight to the families, because they didn't pay for tax preparation or refund anticipation loans. Volunteering makes a difference. Imagine the difference over $9.8 million is making in the lives of families in southern Cameron County.
