Volunteer Impact

During the 2016 tax season, 279 volunteers, including high school students from Hanna, Pace, Lopez, Rivera, Porter, La Feria and Los Fresnos High Schools, spent countless hours preparing and e-filing tax returns for local working families qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit. And here's what they accomplished:

  • Volunteers filed 4,557 returns at no cost to the working families.
  • The families received $4,821,174.00 in Earned Income Credits and $1,148,865.00 in Child Tax Credits
  • Total refunds received were $9.8 million, and every penny of that money went straight to the families, because they didn't pay for tax preparation or refund anticipation loans. Volunteering makes a difference. Imagine the difference over $9.8 million is making in the lives of families in southern Cameron County.
