Internships Work

The All In Internship Program connects college students to paid learning opportunities with Brownsville area businesses. With funding from the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation, United Way of Southern Cameron County provides internship coordinators at Texas Southmost College and University of Texas RGV to help connect students in their final year of school with real life work experience. Businesses provide one-half of the intern's compensation, and United Way provides the other half. Ninety internships are available during this pilot project, which was recently renewed by the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation.

Owner of The Balli Group, Fernando Balli, believes it is important for interns to gain expertise in their trade, as well as get experience in accounting and finance regardless of their field of study. "No matter what field you are in, you need to learn how to reconcile a bank account." Internship opportunities are a way of "putting the book to use," according to Balli. In other words, what students learn in class is also taught in a hands-on way to enhance their knowledge.

How does a company benefit from an internship program?

"For me, I'm able to accomplish other projects that I am not able to focus on while working with other tasks, like building a new webpage, and that is one project which my intern helped with," says Balli. Internships are a great way for students to find out if they actually like the field before they get into it---dipping their toes in the water before diving in.

“These opportunities for internships are important because knowledge and experience provides resources needed on a resume when applying for career opportunities. If I’m looking at resumes and I see someone interned with another construction or design company, I automatically gain interest in that resume,” commented Balli.

Balli recommends businesses be open to developing interns with qualities that benefit the company as a way to develop a company’s future employees.

All In's Leadership Team believes that human capital development is a key component for the future economic vitality of Brownsville.

Workforce Solutions Cameron, an All In partner, provides a Work Readiness Training for all internship students placed with an employer that includes interpersonal skills, soft skills, employer expectations, work ethic, and conflict resolution.
